On May 22, 2023 Nikolay Surkov, Senior Researcher of the Center for the Middle East Studies of IMEMO took part in the Roundtable "Syria: Situation in the Country and Relations with Neighbors. Results of the LAS Summit" at the press center of the “Russia Today” news agency.

On May 19, Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) hosted a regular summit of the League of Arab States, which is expected to restore Syria's membership in the LAS after a 12-year hiatus. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was invited to attend the summit. Over the last few months, most Arab states have been diplomatically active in the Syrian direction.

What does this have to do with? What does Syria's return to the Arab family mean? How is the process of normalization of relations between Damascus and Ankara progressing? What is the state of Syrian-Iranian relations today? How long will it take to restore Syria's full economic ties with the Arab world, given the sanctions imposed on the country? What to expect from the geopolitical changes in the region? How high is the involvement of Russia, the US and other external players in the Syrian track today?
