Roundtable discussion “Smart power and Transpacific security and cooperation” was held in IMEMO on January 20, 2014. To hold the discussion the staff members of the Center for Asia-Pacific Studies were joined by Feodor Voitolovsky, Head of the U.S. Studies Section, and Andrey Ryabov, Editor-In-Chief of the Me-I-MO journal.
The discussion focused on analysis of the ideas, which have become foreign policy instruments of the Pacific countries (the U.S., China, Japan, ROK, ASEAN countries). The participants evaluated the influence of these ideas on the evolving new regional order, determined major factors limiting their implementation, pointed out contradictions and possibilities for a compromise between key regional actors.
