Round table «Iraqi Kurdistan today – whether the model of its self-determination is applicable in post-Soviet space» was held at the Center for International Security. The meeting was opened by Alexei G. Arbatov, Head of the Center, RAS Corresponding Member. The discussion was attended by Russian scientists, orientalists, representatives of Russian Foreign Ministry, the government of Iraqi Kurdistan. A wide range of issues associated with the formation of the Kurdistan Region as a federal subject of the new Iraq were being discussed, as well as the effort in addressing the socio-economic problems, the continuing problem of relations with the central authorities of the region and neighboring countries (Turkey, Iran).
The Russian participants focused on the possibility of a positive experience in dealing with Iraqi Kurdistan, ethnic and religious problems in the former Soviet Union. During the roundtable presentation S.M. Ivanov, leading researcher at the Center for International Security IMEMO, presented the monograph: «Iraqi Kurdistan at the present stage».
