On December 2, 2025, Alexander Krylov, Chief Research Fellow of the Sector for the Caucasus of the Center for post-Soviet Studies of IMEMO, Dr. of Science (History), presented an online report "Church and State: Problem of Relations in Post-Soviet Armenia" at the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Armenian Christianity and its Role in the Cultural Space of Transcaucasia: Challenges and Ways of Preservation".

The report emphasized that the long-standing, acute conflict between the civil authorities and the leadership of the Armenian Apostolic Church is of ideological and worldview nature. Nikol Pashinyan's policy corresponds to the ideology of a supranational global oligarchy, which imposes its own vision of the future development of world civilization, in which contemporary ethnocultural diversity must be replaced by the uniformity of a new human community. The Armenian authorities strive for integration with the collective West with its "universal values", transforming Armenian society into a community of individuals ("proud citizens of Armenia") enjoying full freedom of self-expression, including self-determination of their gender in a wide variety of forms. This entails replacing national identity with a supranational identity of universal "citizens of the world" with its non-national model of life and the rejection of traditional values and morality. Freedom of expression for each individual also includes the equality of all religions and various cults, which means the loss of Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC) its former fundamentally important role in the life of the Armenian nation. According to the AAC leadership, the current government's policy is detrimental to the Armenian nation and state. The AAC is among those churches that advocate for the protection of their cultural and historical heritage and traditional values. The historical prospects of the Republic of Armenia and the Armenian nation will be determined by both global changes occurring in the world and the further development of Armenia's domestic political situation, whether its citizens accept "universal Western values" or choose the development based on their own cultural and historical heritage.

The event was attended by professors, doctors, and candidates of historical sciences from Armenia and Russia, representing a number of major universities and scientific centers of the two countries, who discussed current issues on these topics.

Organizers: Lazarev Research Center for Armenian Studies of the Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church of New Nakhichevan and Russia and “Geghard” Scientific Analytical Foundation of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia.
