Scientific Seminar “Britain on the Eve of the General Parliamentary elections”

On May 27, 2024, the Scientific Seminar “Britain on the Eve of the General Parliamentary Elections” of the Center for European Studies of IMEMO was held.

Inna Podkolzina, Senior Researcher of the Center for European Studies of IMEMO, Cand. of Science (Economics), made a report on the topic “Preliminary Results of the Economic Policy of Conservatives”. She presented an overview of the main economic results of the Conservative Party's government and assessed the potential impact of these factors on the Tory political prospects.

The topic of pre-election forecasts was continued by Elena Kharitonova, Senior Researcher of the Center for European Studies of IMEMO, Cand. of Science (Politics), in her speech on the topic “British Politics and Economy in the Mirror of Public Opinion”. The report was devoted to the analysis of sociological polls on the eve of the voting, the key trends in the development of public sentiment and possible consequences for the main political players were highlighted.

Elena Ananieva, Head of the Center for British Studies of the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Cand. of Science (Philosophy), made an analysis of intra-party trends and individual characteristics of the modern British political elite (“The Situation in the Conservative and Labor Parties on the Eve of Elections”).

The report by Kira Godovanuk, Lead Researcher of the Center for British Studies of the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Cand. of Science (Politics), on the topic “The Fight against Illegal Migration as an Element of the Conservatives' Election Strategy (on the Example of the Deal with Rwanda)” was devoted to one of the most acute political topics in Britain in recent years.

Another important aspect was touched upon in the speech Oleg Okhoshin, Senior Researcher of the Center for British Studies of the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Cand. of Science (History), (“Party-Political Landscape in the Celtic Regions of the United Kingdom”).

The final report was delivered by Alexander Aleshin, Senior Researcher of the Department of International Political Problems of IMEMO, Cand. of Science (Politics), who revealed some features of British foreign policy (“British policy in the Russian Direction: the Factor of Elections”).

During the discussion, IMEMO employees made statements: Senior Researcher Tatiyana Andreeva, Lead Researcher Aleksei Volkov, Head of the Sector Givi Machavariani, Research Fellow Daria Moiseeva, Chief Research Fellow Marina Strezhneva.
