On October 8–9, 2025, the Scientific Conference "Sahel: Politics, Economy, Culture", organized by the Center for Sub-Saharan Africa of the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was held.

On October 9, Egor Besedin, Senior Research Assistant of the Sector for New Challenges in South and Southeast Asia of the Center of the Indo-Pacific Region of IMEMO, participated in Section 3. He presented a paper on the topic "Cooperation between Southeast Asian and Sahel Countries as an Example of “South–South” Relations".

The presentation focused on an analysis of contemporary forms of interaction between countries of Southeast Asia and the Sahel region within the logic of “South–South” relations. The paper examined the political, diplomatic, military, economic, and humanitarian aspects of cooperation, as well as the Islamic dimension of partnership through the OIC and the Islamic Development Bank. It was noted that, despite the fragmentation of contacts, there is growing interest in joint projects in the areas of “green” finance, food security, halal infrastructure, and technical education. Particular attention was paid to the prospects for developing a practical roadmap for cooperation between the two subregions of the Global South.
