The Scientific Conference "Russia and the World: Competition and Cooperation in the Arctic" was held in a mixed format at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences on February 3, 2023.

Within the framework of the conference Nikita Belukhin, Junior Research Fellow of the Department for European Political Studies, made a presentation "Assessment of the Prospects of Cooperation with Russia and the Risks of Conflict in the Arctic in the Danish Expert Community".  

The report highlighted the role of the autonomous territories of Greenland and the Faroe Islands in the Danish Arctic strategy, which actively seek to expand their own diplomatic competencies and directly influence the formation of the Danish Arctic strategy. In the course of the presentation it was shown that the maintenance of the Arctic status entails significant costs for Denmark, which are not compensated at the moment by the development of the Arctic territories of the Commonwealth. The limited resources and the need to balance the Arctic and the Baltic directions of defense policy determine the restrained position of Copenhagen with regard to increasing its military presence in the region and make it a pragmatic supporter of peaceful interaction with Russia in the Arctic in the future.

The conference was organized by the Center for Arctic Studies of the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Council of Young Scientists of the Institute of Europe, the Institute for US and Canadian Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Council of Young Scientists of the Institute for US and Canadian Studies.
