On December 25, 2023, the Center of the Indo-Pacific Region of IMEMO held a Scientific Conference "On the Ruins of Gunpowder Empires: Politics, Economy, Security".

The conventional boundaries of regions, that modern political and economic sciences operate on, were formed mainly in the XX century. South and Southeast Asia, the Greater Middle East, the Balkans and North Africa – this usual division does not allow us to trace the fabric of historically established social ties that still exists in the area from the Bay of Bengal to the Adriatic Sea. The aim of the conference is to identify the traces of this unity, which disintegrated only in the first half of the XX century, and to determine how previously established social, economic and political institutions survive in the current realities and interact with contemporary institutions.
