Interinstitutional Conference “The United States in the World Economy: The Problem of Maintaining Leadership”

On April 18, 2023 Primakov National Research Institute and the Arbatov Institute for US and Canada Studies held an Interinstitutional Conference "The United States in the World Economy: the Problem of Maintaining Leadership"

The conference was opened by Feodor Voitolovsky, IMEMO Acting Director, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Valery Garbuzov, ISKRAN Director, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Sergey Rogov, ISKRAN Academic Director, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences. 

Feodor Voitolovsky, IMEMO Acting Director, spoke about the high assessment of the project "Post-Crisis World Order: Challenges and Technologies, Competition and Cooperation", implemented jointly by IMEMO and ISKRAN under the grant of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation for conducting major research projects in priority areas of scientific and technological development (Agreement ¹ 075-15-2020-783). There is a probability that the project will be extended, and in this case it is necessary to direct the vector of work towards forecasting trends in world economic and political development, highlighting the factor of Russian-American relations in global processes. This conference provides a very serious basis for the intensification of this work and can serve as a good basis for joint publications of the two institutes. 

According to Feodor Voitolovsky, IMEMO and ISKRAN have considerable potential in joint research of security problems.

The event was also attended by employees of the Center for North American Studies of IMEMO, ISKRAN, HSE University and MGIMO University. Participants discussed the internal and external challenges facing the United States in terms of maintaining leadership in the global economy. 

In particular, the following urgent questions were discussed:
•    what could be the new US economic model?
•    how is the social structure of the United States being transformed?
•    what kind of modernization is needed in the American immigration system and is it possible under current conditions?
•    can the US become an energy transition leader?
•    how will US-Chinese foreign economic relations develop in the face of the declared confrontation?
•    and finally, what role can North American integration play in maintaining American leadership?
