On November 29, 2024, the International Expert Seminar “Results of Parliamentary Elections in Georgia and Russian-Georgian Relations” was held online at the Institute of CIS Countries.

The employees of the Sector for the Caucasus of the Center for post-Soviet Studies of IMEMO made presentations at the event:

  • Vadim Mukhanov, Head of the Sector, Cand. of Science (History), – “On the Preliminary Results of the Parliamentary Elections in Georgia”;
  • Alexander Krylov, Chief Research Fellow of the Sector, Dr. of Science (History), – “Georgia after the Elections in the Regional Context”.

Organizer: Caucasus Department of the Institute of CIS Countries.

Russian and Georgian experts discussed the results of the parliamentary elections in Georgia and they tried to answer the questions: Why did everything happen exactly this way? Why did the predictions for Maidan not come true? What to expect from the new era of the “Georgian Dream” governance?

On October 26, 2024, parliamentary elections were held in Georgia, which were won by the ruling party “Georgian Dream”. On November 25, the newly elected parliament held its first session, and on November 27, it scheduled the election of the new president of Georgia for December 14. The situation before these elections was tense. Many things were expected from them: some people expected a “final and decisive battle” of the opposition with the “Georgian Dream”, up to the Georgian Maidan, and some people expected a major foreign policy turn of Georgia towards Russia. However, everything went according to the established procedure. Opposition protests did not actually lead to anything. And “Georgian Dream” confidently entered the new parliamentary cycle.
