International online conference “Moral Responsibility of a Scientist”

On February 25, 2021, under the auspices of the Organizing Committee for Preparing and Holding Celebrations of Andrei Sakharov’s 100th Birthday, established in accordance with the order of the President of the Russian Federation, the online conference “Moral Responsibility of a Scientist” took place.  The event was organized in cooperation with the International Luxembourg Forum on Preventing Nuclear Catastrophe.

The event was started off by the President of IMEMO RAS, Academician Secretary of the Division for Global Issues and International Relations of RAS Alexander Dynkin. President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician Alexander Sergeyev addressed the participants. The Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Luxembourg Forum, Chief Research Fellow at the Center for International Security (CIS), Professor, Major General (ret.) Vladimir Dvorkin addressed the meeting on behalf of the Forum (presentation “Moral Responsibility of Scientists”).

Presentations were provided by the following speakers:

  • Distinguished Professor of the University of Maryland; Academician, RAS, Roald Sagdeev (Russia/USA);
  • Director of the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies; Professor of Nonproliferation Studies at the Middlebury Institute of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Member of RAS, William Potter (USA);
  • Vice-President of RAS; Member of the Presidium of RAS, Alexey Khokhlov;
  • Member of the Board of Directors of The Andrei Sakharov Foundation, Marina Sakharova-Liberman (UK/Russia);
  • Senior Research Physicist and Professor of Public and International Affairs Emeritus at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, Frank von Hippel (USA);
  • Former Director of the Andrei Sakharov Program on Human Rights at the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University, Tatiana Yankelevich-Bonner (USA/Russia);
  • Head of Laboratory at the Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU); Professor, Alexey Semenov (Russia);
  • Professor at Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine; Member of the German Ethics Council, Jens Reich (Germany);
  • Head of the Intercellular Interaction Division of the National Institutes of Health of the United States of America; Professor at the Department of Bioengineering and Bioinformatics of the Lomonosov MSU, Leonid Margolis (Russia/USA).

A total of 36 persons participated in the event. The conference was moderated by the Head of CIS IMEMO RAS, Academician Alexey Arbatov.
