64On April 1, 2025, Valentina Kulakovskaya, Research Fellow of the Center for Strategic Planning Studies of IMEMO, took part in the International Scientific Conference “Lomonosov Readings–2025” at Lomonosov Moscow State University (in the Section “Problems and Opportunities of Public Administration of Rational Nature Management and Environmental Protection”).
Within the framework of the Conference, Valentina Kulakovskaya made a report “Artificial Intelligence and Carbon Footprint: the Hidden Price of Digital Technologies”. In her speech, the author highlighted both the possibilities of using artificial intelligence (AI) in solving environmental problems and its negative impact on the environment associated with high energy consumption and significant greenhouse gas emissions. Special attention was paid to the role of data centers, which are the infrastructural basis of AI, as well as the experience of Finland, Sweden and Norway in creating environmentally sustainable data storage centers. The report presented recommendations for reducing the carbon footprint of AI application. The author emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach and international cooperation to ensure a sustainable digital future.
