International Conference “Sustainable Development in South Asia: Economy, Society, Ecology”

On December 2, 2024 employees of the Center of the Indo-Pacific Region of IMEMO made presentations at the International Conference “Sustainable Development in South Asia: Economy, Society, Ecology”, organized by the Center for South Asian Studies of the Institute for International Studies of MGIMO University of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

Evgenia Zeegofer, Junior Research Fellow of the Center of the Indo-Pacific Region of IMEMO, In her presentation “New Water Policy of  India: to Be or not to Be?”, examined the stages of evolution of the Indian government's approach to water use and water resources management, and analyzed the main provisions of the draft of a new conceptual document in this area and the prospects for its adoption and implementation.

Irina Kolgushkina, Junior Research Fellow of the Center of the Indo-Pacific Region of IMEMO, made a presentation “Implementation of SDG No. 5 in the Energy Sector in India”. The presentation analyzed India's progress in achieving gender equality and considered the potential of women's participation in the “green energy” sphere.

Maria Savishcheva, Senior Research Assistant of the Center of the Indo-Pacific Region of IMEMO, made a presentation “The Case of Sexual Violence at the R.G. Kar Hospital in Kolkata: What Really Prevents the Empowerment of Women in India?”, in which the main systemic contradictions that hinder the solution of the problem of sexual violence and the achievement of gender equality in India at the present stage were highlighted using the example of the aforementioned case.

Leyla Turayanova, Junior Research Fellow of the Center of the Indo-Pacific Region of IMEMO, spoke about New Delhi's policy in the field of small nuclear power and analyzed the prospects for the construction of small modular reactors (SMR) in India.

Ivan Shchedrov, Junior Research Fellow of the Center of the Indo-Pacific Region of IMEMO, made a report “India's First Geothermal Power Plant as a Political Resource of the BJP”, which presented the peculiarities of the implementation of the Indian government's projects in the field of renewable energy in the Ladakh region.

The conference was attended by researchers from Russia, India and Pakistan.
