Memorial meeting was held at IMEMO on January 15, 2014 to commemorate the centenary of birth of Prof. Yakov Pevzner, an eminent Russian orientalist and economy scholar. His living colleagues and followers now working at IMEMO (Yelena Leontieva, Yefim Hesin, Felix Burdzhalov, Alexander Fedorovsky, to name a few), the Instititute of Oriental Studies (Seda Markaryan, Alexey Kirichenko) and others shared their past experiences and memories connected to this renowned scholar and his research activities. The meeting was also attended by Galina Fyodorova, Prof. Pevzner’s widow.
Those who gathered at the meeting made a special note of Prof. Pevzner’s contribution to the cause of his country as an intelligence officer during the World War II, his career as a researcher in the decades which followed, and his role of one of the leading figures and a promoter of Japan studies in the Soviet Union, particularly at IMEMO. Words of praise and gratitude were delivered by his former students and followers from Russia and elsewhere to pay tribute to the memory of the talented researcher and master to younger scholars.
