July 4 marks the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the United States Declaration of Independence, which laid the foundation for the formation of sovereign US domestic and foreign policy, including on defense and security issues.
Returning to the White House in January 2025, Donald Trump, the 47th US President, announced the US intention to deploy a large-scale missile defense system with space-based echelons, capable, in his words, of repelling any nuclear or non-nuclear missile attack. This plan could threaten strategic stability, ultimately undermine the strategic arms dialogue between Russia and the US, and increase the risk of nuclear war.
Is it technically feasible to deploy the US "Golden Dome" to accomplish such ambitious goals? What military, political, and strategic consequences would the implementation of this plan entail? How have past attempts to create a missile defense shield ended? Is it possible to prevent the destruction of strategic stability and save the arms limitation process?
A monograph by Vasily Klimov "US Missile Defense: Weapons, Strategy, Policy" was presented at the event.
