Roundtable on the results of parliamentary elections in Georgia

25

On October 28, 2024, a Roundtable on the results of parliamentary elections in Georgia was held in “Russia Today” international multimedia press center. The discussion was attended by Vadim Mukhanov, Head of the Sector for the Caucasus of the Center for post-Soviet Studies of IMEMO, Cand. of Science (History).

Theses of the speech:

  • 1.    The elections in Georgia have taken place, the outcome is very predictable.
  • 2.    Almost all experts and the latest opinion polls spoke about the ruling “Georgian Dream” party as the favorite of the upcoming vote (in the range of 40 to 60 %).
  • 3.    The opposition, divided into several blocs, lost definitely the elections and is now discussing scenarios of post-election activity, i. e. going out into the streets with their supporters.
  • 4.    One of the obvious reasons for the opposition's defeat is its disunity and the actual rivalry of one bloc with another.
  • 5.    The role of external factor is very important in the internal political aggravation that has started, because in addition to the election results there is an important process of their recognition, which is now being deliberately delayed by western partners of Georgia, who are dissatisfied with the convincing victory of the “Georgian Dream”.
