On May 30, 2024 at 11:00 am in the Academician Inozemtsev large conference hall the Roundtable of the Center of the Indo-Pacific Region “’Whatever you Call the Yacht, it will Sail’: Toponymic Conflicts in the Context of Transformation of the World System” will be held.

Toponymy has played an important role throughout the history of international relations. Fierce disputes arise for the right to name and be called. In recent years, the “toponymic war” between India and China has escalated. Such cartographic clashes are a long-standing phenomenon; they reflect deeper geopolitical contradictions and claims to regional and local cultural hegemony.

Who is renaming geographical objects in the XXI century and why? What can lead to the aspiration of different actors of the international system to propose and consolidate their vision of the world map? At the Roundtable it is planned to analyze the phenomenon of toponymic conflict, examine its possible consequences, highlight general and specific features of toponymic conflicts in South Asia in comparison with similar conflicts in other regions of the world.
