On February 12, 2024, the RIAC hosted the conference "Regional Dynamics in the Middle East in the Context of Security and Development Challenges". The purpose of the event was to discuss key trends in the Middle East, as well as current political processes taking place in the region.
Four panel discussions were held as part of the conference.
The first session, "Regional Development and Security Trends in the Middle East", a presentation of the RIAC report "Regional Trends in the Middle East: Political and Economic Dynamics" authored by Russian experts on Middle East issues, took place.
At the second session, "Non-Regional Players in the Middle East", experts discussed the main aspects of the Middle East policies of Russia, the United States, China and India. From IMEMO, the reports were delivered by Alexander Lomanov, Acting Deputy Director for Scientific Work, Dr. of Science (History), and Alexey Kupriyanov, Head of the Center for the Indo-Pacific Region, Cand. of Science (History).
During the third session, "Military Conflicts in the Middle East", the report was presented by Lyudmila Samarskaya, Research Fellow of the Center for the Middle East Studies, Cand. of Science (History). The participants also discussed the situation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone, Syria, Yemen and Libya. Special attention was paid to the prospects for resolving military conflicts in the Middle East region.
Within the framework of the fourth session, "Regional Policy of the Middle East Countries", the conference participants focused on the policy of the countries aspiring to regional leadership: Iran, Turkey, Israel, as well as some Arab states. The experts paid special attention to the main trends in the system of regional relations in the new conditions. Among the speakers was Irina SvistunovIrina Svistunovaa, Senior Researcher of the Center for Middle East Studies, Cand. of Science (History).
Ibragim Ibragimov, Research Fellow of the Center for Middle East Studies, moderated one of the sessions.
