On May 20–21, 2026, the conference "Ecology and Society in South Asia: Internal and External Factors" was held by the Center for Indian Studies at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

On May 20, Gleb Makarevich, PhD in Political Science, a research fellow at the Center of the Indo-Pacific Region at IMEMO, presented a paper at the conference entitled "Not Fishing in Troubled Waters: Sustainable Development Goals in Indian Economic Planning."

The paper highlighted the Indian government's efforts to implement the Sustainable Development Goals, outlined key environmental initiatives, and demonstrated the impact of these campaigns on the country's socioeconomic development.

On May 21, Yana Sadovnikova, PhD in History, a research fellow at the Center for Development and Modernization Studies at IMEMO, presented a panel discussion entitled "Development Challenges for the Steel Industry in the Republic of India: An Environmental Aspect."

Her report examined the state and development prospects of the modern steel industry in India and assessed the measures taken by the N. Modi government to decarbonize the industry.
