31The comments by Natalia Romashkina and Dmitry Stefanovich on the new Comprehensive Review of security, defense, development and foreign policy of the UK are published on the website of the Academy of Military Science of the Russian Federation.
“The increase of the nuclear capability of the UK is becoming significant and can bring about the serious complications in the negotiations between the Russian Federation and the United States on the strategic offensive arms. Furthermore, it is possible, that the previously expressed position of Russia on the need to involve the United Kingdom and France in the negotiations on strategic stability and on the further reduction of nuclear capabilities is likely to be more persistent.
Taking into account that in the Document Russia is considered the main threat to the security of the UK, as well as the fact that the nuclear weapons of all the NATO nuclear countries are aimed at the Russian Federation, we can talk about the dangerous temptation to gain the strategic advantage over Russia in the nuclear sphere. That means the threat to the maintained global balance of power in the world, to the sufficient level of stability and to the negotiation processes.”
“The modernization of the nuclear warheads as well as the whole arsenal is an understandable task. Since the nuclear-weapon-free world is not yet even slightly evident, it would be better and safer for everyone if the corresponding kinds of weapon were reliable and modern, although the plans for the possible growth of its quantities still remain insufficiently substantiated.”
