Public Organization “Dialogue” published a comment “Expert: Erdogan is important for Russia because he is an independent player in the domain of foreign policy in relation to the West” by Chief Research Fellow for the Section for the Caucasus of the Center for post-Soviet Studies of the IMEMO Dr. Alexander Krylov.

For Russia, Erdogan is a very difficult partner, but the most important thing is that he still remains an independent negotiating partner. We will never have brotherly love, this is a naive concept in international relations in general, and is never confirmed by reality. There are interests in international politics and there are negotiating partners, who will defend their interests, not your interests, in the name of some brotherhood. Erdogan is valuable because he is still independent. This is most clearly manifested in energy policy, in the policy on the straits. The implementation of the Montreux Convention is extremely important for Russia. And if there were no Erdogan in Turkey, then there would have been a complicated question whether other Turkish leaders would fulfill the Montreux Convention, and could pursue the same policy dependent on external centers of influence as the current Eastern European states...
