
On December 22, 2023, Dmitry Malyshev, Lead Researcher of the Sector for Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine of the Center for post-Soviet Studies of IMEMO, Cand. of Science (History), delivered a report "CIS in Modern International Realities and Possible Development Alternatives" at the IX International Online Conference "Foreign Policy in the Eurasian Space. To the 30th Anniversary of the Signing of the CIS Charter", which was held at Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN).
In his speech, Dmitry Malyshev noted the main stages of the CIS formation, the main directions of activity of the Commonwealth as an international organization, scenarios of its development at the present stage, the influence of common processes in the CIS space on its development, the development of the CIS in the conditions of the Special Military Operation.
The following topics were discussed at the conference:
- • CIS countries as part of the collective non-West;
- • Multi-vector nature of the CIS countries: challenge or opportunity;
- • Russia's Interests in the CIS: content, prospects, constraints;
- • China's Strategy in the CIS region: new approaches and trends;
- • The Turkish factor in the CIS: are ambitions justified?
- • Western policy towards the CIS countries;
- • EU policy in the CIS;
- • The Ukrainian crisis and its impact on the situation in the CIS region;
- • Internal and external threats to the security of the CIS countries;
- • Possible scenarios of CIS development.
The conference participants analyzed the situation with the development of Eurasian integration. Special attention was paid to issues related to Eurasian ideology and the prospects of expanding Eurasian integration by involving the countries of Greater Eurasia. Based on the discussion, scientifically grounded proposals for improving integration processes in the Eurasian space will be developed.
