There was held a meeting of the Presidium of the RAS. The main topic was “The crisis in Afghanistan in the light of the regional relations”. Irina Zvyagelskaya made the key report at the event. It was about the consequences of the Taliban movement taking power in Afghanistan (the organization is banned in the Russian Federation).

“Taliban’s rise to power was favorably received by various kinds of radical organizations in the Middle East. Moreover, by these we mean not only selected organizations, but also the conservative part in the Muslim states themselves, primarily in the Gulf states. Coming to power of the Taliban can contribute to the strengthening of the most radical sentiments and foster the radicalization of society. This is one of the most important elements of the influence of the events in Afghanistan on neighboring countries. In addition, it is not entirely clear what position the Taliban will take with regard to the global Islamic ummah and world jihad. We can not now fully assess which trend, nationalistic or more global, will prevail in the future policy of the Taliban, and a lot will depend on this, in particular, the positions of those elites, who afraid of the radical influence of Islam.”
