October 18, 2018. IMEMO presented the Russian edition of the SIPRI Yearbook 2017 ‘Armaments, Disarmament and International Security’ with the Special Supplement compiled by IMEMO experts and guest contributors, and hosted a joint conference with the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the joint project between the two institutes.

Academician Alexey G. Arbatov, Head of the IMEMO Center for International Security, opened the event. Dan Smith, Director of SIPRI, and Academician Vladimir G. Baranovsky, Head of Division at the IMEMO Center for Situation Analysis and one of the founders of the project, delivered welcoming remarks.

Dr Sergey K. Oznobishchev, Head of Division at the Center for International Security and Project Coordinator, told the participants about the process of preparing the Russian edition and some important topics covered by the Special Supplement.

The key issues of the discussion included limitation and reduction of nuclear weapons and nuclear non-proliferation, European security and conventional arms control in Europe, the impact of emerging technologies on arms control. The speakers were (in order of the schedule) Academician Alexey G. Arbatov; Dr Vladimir Z. Dvorkin, Chief Researcher at the IMEMO Center for International Security; Dr Petr V. Topychkanov, Senior Researcher in the SIPRI Disarmament, Arms Control and Nonproliferation Programme; Dr Andrey V. Zagorsky, Head of Department at the IMEMO Center for International Security; Dr Sergey K. Oznobishchev; and Dr Sibylle Bauer, Director of Studies, Armament and Disarmament and Director of the SIPRI Disarmament, Arms Control and Non-Proliferation Programme.

The participants stressed the important contribution of the IMEMO–SIPRI cooperation project to providing data and analysis to expert and policy-making communities, as well as to enhancing transparency and strengthening dialogue on security and arms control issues.

More than a hundred representatives of government organizations and agencies, institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, independent research centers, NGOs, media and embassies attended the event.
