Sergey Lukonin's chapter "Russo-Chinese Trade and Economic Cooperation" in the collective monograph

In the collective monograph "China and Eurasian Powers in a Multipolar World Order 2.0: Security, Diplomacy, Economy and Cyberspace" (Routledge Publisher) was published the chapter "Russo-Chinese Trade and Economic Cooperation" by Sergey Lukonin, Head of the Sector of Economy and Politics of China, Cand. of Science (Economics). It explores Russian-Chinese trade and investment relations, as well as the prospects and limitations in Russian-Chinese trade and investment cooperation.

The economic importance of China for Russia is gradually increasing. The greatest progress in Russo-Chinese relations has been achieved in the sphere of bilateral trade. The relatively small volume of Chinese direct and accumulated investment in Russia continues to increase. Joint projects are being implemented in the field of space exploration, aircraft manufacturing, defence, extraction, processing and transportation of energy carriers and other minerals, telecommunications, transport, and so forth. Cooperation in the financial sphere is developing step-by-step.

There are certain limitations on the way of development of Russian-Chinese cooperation. In general, these limitations are the low growth rates of the Russian economy and, accordingly, its small scale compared to other economic partners of China. In particular, a small number of Russian high-tech industries, whose products may be of interest to Chinese consumers, does not allow for expanding the share of Russian high-tech goods in China. One of the consequences of these restrictions is the relatively small volume of Russian-Chinese trade, compared, for example, with Sino-Vietnamese or Sino-South Korean trade, as well as a small number of Russian-Chinese joint value chains.

At the same time, both external and internal factors in the development of Russia and China will contribute to the expansion of bilateral economic cooperation. In general, the new sanctions imposed on Russia due to the 2022 Russian-Ukrainian crisis will contribute to strengthening Russo-Chinese trade and economic cooperation. Chinese companies will try to occupy niches in the Russian market that have become vacant after the departure of Western suppliers. However, in particular, there could be difficulties in some cooperation areas: large international Chinese corporations will approach extremely cautiously to cooperate with Russian counterparties due to fears of falling under secondary Western sanctions for such cooperation.
