The report on the experience of the great powers in reducing risks and on its applicability to the current situation in the Asia-Pacific region «Great Power Risk Reduction Measures and Lessons for the Asia-Pacific» by Research Fellow for the Center for International Security of the IMEMO Dmitry Stefanovich was published on the website of the Asia-Pacific Leadership Network on January 19, 2022.

Risk reduction, deconfliction, incident prevention, arms control - all these concepts and areas of effort are not new. But they are not simple. The number and scale of threats to global peace and security (including those of the apocalyptic scale) are practically not decreasing.

In such circumstances, it is the primary responsibility of the leaders of states, as well as the public, to continue efforts to limit and reduce the risk of major military conflicts, as they can easily get out of hand and lead to the use of nuclear weapons with the most catastrophic consequences...
