On June 5, 2024, the Center for International Security of IMEMO held a Working Seminar on the use of nuclear technologies in space for military and dual-use problems.
During the seminar, technical, military-strategic and political prerequisites, trends and prospects for the development of nuclear technologies in the interests of space activities were discussed. The international legal dimension of relevant developments in the context of the Outer Space Treaty, the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the relevant draft resolutions of the UN Security Council was examined. Special attention was paid to the impact of militarization and weaponization of outer space on strategic stability.
The Seminar was chaired by Academician Alexey Arbatov, Head of the Center for International Security of IMEMO.
Presentations were made by Alexander Yermakov, Junior Research Fellow of the Center for International Security (“Main Directions in the Development of Space Nuclear Technologies in the United States and Other Western Countries”) and Dmitry Stefanovich, Research Fellow of the Center for International Security (“Nuclear Technologies and Military Space Activities”).
The Seminar was also attended by Ivan Danilin, Head of the Department of Science and Innovation of IMEMO, Cand. of Science (Politics).
