On December 23, 2024, the Center for the Middle Eastern Studies held a regular Georgy Mirsky Middle East Seminar “Traditional Institutions in the Political Systems of Arab Countries”.

The leading speaker of the Seminar was Vasily Kuznetsov, Dr. of Science (Politics), Cand. of Science (History), Head of the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies, Deputy Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences – an authoritative Russian Arabist-Orientalist and a recognized expert in the field of history, as well as contemporary political, social and cultural processes in Arab countries. The report presented the results of his own research and examine the significance of traditional institutions in the political systems of Arab states, their influence on decision-making process and the development of political processes in the region.

The co-speaker was be Nikolay Sukhov, Lead Researcher of the Center for the Middle East Studies of IMEMO, Cand. of Science (History). His extensive work experience in the structures of “Rossotrudnichestvo” in Damascus (Syria) and Rabat (Morocco), as well as in the office of the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Syria, allows him to offer valuable expertise on the role of traditional institutions in the political and social processes of Arab countries.
