On November 13, 2024, the “Asian Seminar” under the leadership of Academician Vasily Mikheev was held in the Academician Inozemtsev conference hall.

The topic of the Seminar: “The New Middle Class and India's Foreign Policy: Patriotism, Consumption and Panic”.

Speaker: Alexey Kupriyanov, Head of the Center of the Indo-Pacific Region of IMEMO, Cand. of Science (History).

Traditionally, India's foreign policy was determined by decisions made within the narrow circle of the prime minister's confidants and dictated primarily by considerations of high politics, inter-party struggle, the need to ensure economic development and personal preferences of the country's leaders. But starting from the late 1980s, a new player entered the domestic political arena – the so-called new urbanized middle class, which quickly turned into the most active part of the electorate. Over the past decades, this social stratum has grown and is increasingly claiming political subjectivity, directly and indirectly influencing India's foreign policy.

The event was held in a mixed format.
