On January 31, 2019, Primakov Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences hosted the 2018 Global Go To Think Tank Index Launch from the University of Pennsylvania’s Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program.

The event was a part of the global Index Launch, which was held in more than 280 analytical centers in 85 countries around the world simultaneously.

After the Launch event IMEMO convened a seminar “Why Facts and Think Tanks Matter?” to discuss the role of think tanks in the global economy and international politics. Among the panelists were IMEMO President Prof. Alexander Dynkin, IMEMO Director Dr. Feodor Voitolovsky, Head of Research Department, Leibniz Institute Peace Research Institute Frankfurt Hans-Joachim Spanger; Deputy Director of IMEMO Dr. Irina Semenenko, Dr. Sergey Utkin, Dr. Kristina Voda, Dr. Eduard Soloviev, Dr. Andrey Ryabov, Givi Machavariani.

In their presentations, the panelists highlighted the historical development of think tank institution in a number of countries, the connections between analytical organizations and decision-making process; reviewed the experience of Asian think tanks, discussed the problem of the visibility of research organizations, their growing presence in the media and the Internet, social networks and the influence of these developments on the quality of the think tanks’ product.
