Abstract

The article discusses a range of strategic issues related to the U.S. participation in the Afghan conflict. It addresses the following key questions: whether the current state of things demonstrates that the U.S. Afghan policy has reached its dead end, whether the U.S. goals evolve in the direction of maintaining some security presence in Afghanistan, and to what extent Washington?s approach to the Afghan problem is part of broader regional strategy. Considering the ongoing transformation of the U.S. priorities for this conflict and destabilizing trends in Afghanistan, the article concludes that the U.S. goal is to maintain its military and political presence in the region. If the Trump administration manages to at least prevent the loss of strategic initiative by Kabul to anti-government forces until the end of the U.S. presidential race in 2020, the window of opportunity for Washington in Afghanistan, provided U.S. policy continuity, may widen, especially in terms of leverage on Pakistan.
