Abstract. The main task of this research is the analysis of the current state and prospects of wind and solar energy in Iran as the country possessing significant natural renewable energy potential. Special attention is paid to the fact that in accordance with the latest national five-year economic development plan the Government is tasked to accelerate the process of putting into operation new capacities in the field of renewables. Following the first results of the plan implementation, it is placed on record that total capacity of wind and solar power plants has significantly increased. In order to underpin the analysis, the author discloses important peculiarities of Iranian comprehensive energy statistics regarding renewable energy sector noting that at present hydropower capacities are presented separately from wind and solar power plants. Besides, on the basis of particular international assessments the research portrays position of the country in that segment among neighbors. The author touches upon the issue of the government policies aimed at attracting foreign and domestic investments in the renewable energy sector. Transformation of public authorities and modification of Guaranteed Renewable Electricity Purchase Tariffs are the focus of attention of the research in this case. At the same time the rise of Iranian scientific institutions dealing with issues of renewables is mentioned. Particular data on the capacity of Iranian wild and solar power plants is also provided. Furthermore, it is emphasized that due to a new round of sanction pressure on Iran economic roadblocks to execution of relevant projects have emerged and some well-known foreign conglomerates have left the Iranian market or suspended its business there. Nevertheless, national industrial corporations possess necessary technologies and expertise for continuing further capacity addition.
