Abstract. The article deals with the main theoretical approaches that interpret the development as a long-term (centuries-long) economic movement and that explain its principles. An attempt is made to choose concepts capable to serve as a general theory of development. The author examines a variety of points of view on the problem of development; substantiates the choice of the theoretical framework of analysis and synthesis system as a method of analysis that is necessary to avoid the economic and any other-determinism. An interpretation of the economy as a system object is proposed.
