The article is dedicated to the scientific activities of IMEMO in 1989 which was a turning point for Perestroika, when the society had the feeling that a lot of the accumulated problems in the country couldn’t be solved in the framework of the previous political system. Academic life at the Institute was still intense and strenuous, but at the same time the team grew frustrated with the low-impact of its performance. There was a clear feeling that M.S. Gorbachev and his team didn’t know what to do with the country, more and more in chaos.
