Abstract. After the Ukrainian events of 2014 relations between Russia and the West have deteriorated significantly. The Crimea reunification with the Russian Federation has been interpreted as a dangerous precedent indicating the revival of Moscow’s imperial ambitions. Under the pretext of strengthening the security of its European allies NATO has significantly increased its military presence and combat readiness in close proximity to Russia’s borders. Meanwhile in the process of “containment” of Moscow the post-Soviet countries which head for entry into the Alliance are involved. At the same time, the Alliance tries to withdraw from the influence of Moscow its closest strategic allies.
