Abstract. Relations of Russia and China with the states of Central Asia over more than a quarter of a century passed since the collapse of the USSR are saturated with var-ious events. In these events, politics, economics and security are closely inter-twined with each other. Russian and Chinese involvement in the affairs of the region has its own specifics. Of course, the significance of Central Asia and its concrete countries for Russia and China, as well as the readiness of Moscow and Bei-jing to coordinate efforts with each other, is different.

In order to deepen the scientific and analytical-forecast understanding of the current and future places of Russia and China in Central Asia, as well as their relations, it is fundamental to try to conceptually and schematically assess Russian and Chinese factors in a historical context. One of such attempts is made in this article. It involves consideration of the presence and interaction of Russia and China in Central Asia in the areas of politics, economics and security from the ret-rospective of the following two historical periods: the heyday of the Great Silk Road and the decline of the Great Silk Road.
