Nord Stream 2, Baltic States and Ukraine: An Environmental-political Dimension of the Conflict

Abstract. Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, under the construction since autumn 2015, faces an obstacle related to the environmental component of the project. In the opinion existing in Europe the pipeline undermines climate and environmental security of the region. Although “Nord Stream AG” responsible for its construction introduced innovations in its work, public ecological expertise still proposed to change the pipeline route. Opponents to the project, including Baltic states, Ukraine and Denmark, try to stop the project on ecological grounds. The article analyzes these arguments and presents its forecast regarding an outcome of the confrontation.
