Abstract. In the context of the five-year anniversary of the International Mine Action Center under the Russian Armed Forces (August 1, 2019), this article is the first attempt to analyze contribution of the Russian Engineer Troops to preservation of historical and cultural monuments. In view of special importance of historical and cultural monuments and archeological complexes of Palmyra, Aleppo, and Deir ez-Zor for the world history, culture and civilization, as well as their significance for post-conflict reconstruction in Syria, this type of mine clearance should be treated as a distinct dimension of humanitarian demining, of unique, universal value.

Keywords: Engineer troops, International Mine Action Center, safeguarding cultural heritage in areas of armed conflict, humanitarian demining, Syria, Palmyra, Aleppo, Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums, Laos, Plain of Jars
