Abstract

The conflict in Syria has involved many different participants with diverging views of the situation. Russia supports the Syrian state headed by President B.Assad and the government forces, including through military means, and at the same time promotes a peaceful dialogue between the government and the opposition. At the earliest stages of the civil war in Syria, Germany tried to refrain from supporting any side in the political discussions about the future of the Syrian state. However, a wave of migrants from the Middle East and North Africa, along with other factors, pushed it to back the U.S.-led coalition that, on the one hand, carried out strikes against ISIS in Syria and Iraq and, on the other hand, stood for regime change in Syria and continued to back the Syrian opposition. This article aims to analyze how participation in the settlement of the Syrian conflict affects relations between Russia and Germany that suffered heavily as a result of their disagreements over the crisis in Ukraine.
