Syria’s chemical disarmament: lessons and prospects

Abstract. The article analyzes Syrian Arab Republic’s experience in chemical disarmament, when it was managed to develop a collective position of the international community and to establish constructive cooperation of states in the UN Security Council format. Syria’s chemical demilitarization was carried out with the active cooperation of states from different regions, including Russia. In this case, the UN Security Council was able to demonstrate the ability to adequately respond to urgent issues of international security, which allowed avoiding a war scenario.
