The International conference of young scientists «The Changing West and its Role in Global Regulation» was held in the Primakov National Research Institute of World Economy and International Relations of Russian Academy of Sciences (IMEMO) on April 11-12, 2019. The conference was organized jointly by the IMEMO, the Institute of Europe and the Institute for US and Canadian Studies of Russian Academy of Sciences.

The conference was attended by 75 young scientists and Ph.D students from different institutes of Russian Academy of Science – IMEMO, Institute of Europe, Institute for US and Canadian Studies, Institute for African Studies, Institute of Economics – Karelian Research Centre of RAS (Petrozavodsk), Institute of Latin America, Institute of Oriental Studies, Institute of World History, Institute for Slavic Studies;

from leading scientific centers of Moscow – Diplomatic Academy of Russian Foreign ministry, Higher School of Economics, Lomonosov Moscow State University, MGIMO University, MIREA - Russian Technological University, People’s Friendship University of Russia, Russian Institute of Strategic Studies, Russian State University for the Humanities; 

as well as from Russian regional universities – Kuban State University (Krasnodar); Lobachevsky State University (Nizhni Novgorod); North-West Institute of Management – branch of RANEPA (St.Petersburg); Southern Federal University (Rostov-on-Don) and the Governmental Office of the city of Sevastopol.

Foreign scientific centers also were represented on the conference: Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University, Sorbonne University (Paris), University College London, University of Kent (Canterbury). 

The welcoming remarks to the participants were addressed by academician, Dr. of Science (Economics), First Deputy Director of IMEMO Natalya Ivanova; by professor, Dr. of Science (Economics), deputy Director for Scientific Work of the Institute of Europe Olga Butorina and by professor, Dr. of Science (Economics), Chief of Scientific Work of the Institute for US and Canadian Studies Viktor Supyan.

The conference included seven sections, dedicated to the key challenges and possibilities for the development of the global economic and political system in the XXI century. Young scientists and Ph.D students observed the problems of cooperation and competition between leading Western states, main vectors of their economic development and interaction, domestic challenges for European integration. They also analyzed the West security issues as well as problems of the humanitarian policy and “soft power” of the Western states. The participants of the conference reviewed in detail the tools and consequences of the Western influence on the non-Western world: in through the military-political lens and with the framework of the sustainable development assistance. Young scholars also touched the interaction of the West with Russia: the participants discussed contemporary technological development of the West and the possibilities opened to Russia, the perception and interaction of the West and Russia, and the development of the Central and Eastern European states and countries of the post-Soviet area, disposed between Russia and the West as well.

IMEMO’s young scientists and Ph.D students actively participated in the conference. They made 22 reports on the following topics:
