Abstract. The publication represents the outcomes of the regular academic seminar “Current problems of development” conducted by the Center of the problems of development and modernization within IMEMO RAS. The participants consider the issues relating to vital changes in Viet Nam since beginning in 1986, namely the transition from a centrally planned to a market economy. It is concluded that this resulted in major shifts in the socio-political sphere with rather positive changes in society and life. The conclusion is made that Viet Nam reaffirmed common transition patterns of development. At the same time, the specific characteristics of the process of modernization of Viet Nam.
