Abstract. The features of the recent M. Gorbachev’s book devoted to his activities during Perestroika period are treated. High attention is paid to the moods of wide public and party circles, including those at regional level as well in cultural and youth environment, that formed since the end of 1970-s. The author points at incompleteness of the launched processes as a result of foreign and domestic counteraction. Some book’s theses, e.g. on prospects of implementing the concept of “new thinking” and of the “European common house”, in spite of their general acceptation, nowadays need to be precised and detailed it theoretical and practical terms.

Keywords: Perestroika, USSR, Russia, socialism, capitalism, totalitarism, stagnation, democracy, transparency, “new thinking”, “European common house”
