Abstract. The enormity and diversity of threats to global strategic stability in the foreseeable future are such that the states can cope with many challenges of the XXI century only together, through appropriate use of the UN Security Council’s potential for managing international risks. Noting the adequacy of its existing mandate the author makes specific suggestions for strengthening the central coordinating role of the UN Security Council in managing international security and arms control.

Keywords: international security management, the UN Security Council mandate, principle of unanimity of the permanent members of the UN Security Council, enforcement, sanctions, collective security, arms control
