IMEMO RAN held the eighth conference in the framework of the joint project Russia and the Deep Nuclear Disarmament implemented in cooperation with the Nuclear Threat Initiative, Inc. The conference was titled "Interconnection between nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation: reality or myth?" IMEMO RAN also presented a brochure with the same title.
Presentations by the key speakers were followed by a discussion of the most pressing issues pertaining to arms limitations and reductions, non-proliferation and security in general. The participants in the conference focused on the main topic, the interconnection between nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, as ell as to the situation and the efficiency of international non-proliferation institutions and strengthening of IAEA safeguards as the major non-proliferation instrument. The conference that gathered several dozens independent experts, officials of the relevant government structure and mass media, provided a venue for a lively exchange of opinions on a wide range of issues related to strengthening national and international security.

Round table "Iraqi Kurdistan today – whether the model of its self-determination is applicable in post-Soviet space" was held at the Center for International Security. The meeting was opened by Alexei G. Arbatov, Head of the Center, RAS Corresponding Member. The discussion was attended by Russian scientists, orientalists, representatives of Russian Foreign Ministry, the government of Iraqi Kurdistan. A wide range of issues associated with the formation of the Kurdistan Region as a federal subject of the new Iraq were being discussed, as well as the effort in addressing the socio-economic problems, the continuing problem of relations with the central authorities of the region and neighboring countries (Turkey, Iran).
The Russian participants focused on the possibility of a positive experience in dealing with Iraqi Kurdistan, ethnic and religious problems in the former Soviet Union. During the roundtable presentation S.M. Ivanov, leading researcher at the Center for International Security IMEMO, presented the monograph: "Iraqi Kurdistan at the present stage".

IMEMO RAN held the fifth conference titled "Prospects for the Transformation of Nuclear Deterrence" under the joint NTI-IMEMO project "Russia and Deep Nuclear Disarmament". The participants in the discussion raised a wide range of problems related to strengthening strategic stability and security.
The Conference focused on issues of conceptual support of bilateral (US-Russia) and international security, and identified a number of fields to be developed and analyzed in greater detail in the final book to be prepared under this joint NTI-IMEMO project by the end of 2011.
The major conclusions of the project, including quite a few expert recommendations of practical value are outlined in four booklets available at IMEMO web-site and dozens of other publications. Currently the next booklet of the series is being prepared on the topic of the Conference. The presentation of the booklet will take part in June.

IMEMO RAS presented the Russian edition of the SIPRI Yearbook 2010 “Armaments, Disarmament and International Security” and the report titled "Prospects for the Transformation of Nuclear Deterrence," prepared in the framework of the joint project implemented by IMEMO RAN and the Nuclear Threat Initiative, Inc. (NTI).
The participants in the ensuing discussion raised the most pressing issues of ensuring international and national security, nuclear deterrence after the end of the Cold War and the process of arms reduction and limitation.

Regular meeting of scientific and theoretical seminar took place at the CENTER for COMPARATIVE SOCIO-ECONOMIC and SOCIO-POLITICAL STUDIES IMEMO RAS with the focus on methodology for analysis of political, social and cultural development of the modern world. The seminar was devoted to the methodology and models of conceptualization of the Russian political history. Presentations were made by V.I. Pantin, Doctor of Sciences (Philosophy), CCSESPS Division Head, (interconnection of the cycles of reforms - counter-reforms with long waves of International Development), V.V. Lapkin, leading researcher,(modeling methodology of spatiotemporal dynamics of the Russian political system), K.G. Kholodkovsky, leading research fellow, (problems of the methodology of the cycles analysis in the Russian history). The meeting was followed by a discussion; the materials are to be published in the journal "Polis".
